The Listowel Arms Hotel

The Listowel Arms hotel has an amazing history of over 200 years! It dates back to 1790 and is a period building of Georgian architecture nestled in the corner of Listowel’s landmark square. The original Inn had a courtyard for horses and carriages and was even used for speeches by historical figures such as Daniel O’Connell and Charles Stuart Parnell who spoke from it’s first floor sash windows! It was a barracks during the civil war and has had a chequered line of custodians including the singer Joseph Locke for a few years in the sixties.

Today it is owned by the O’Callaghan family from Ballybunion, whose Dad, Kerry footballer Bernard bought the hotel in 1996 and set about restoring with his family before his untimely death in 1998.
The hotel has a unique atmosphere and has become a popular wedding venue due to it’s original features and unique location on the banks of the river Feale. The hotel offers the most beautiful vintage themed weddings, in keeping with the history of the building, complete with quirky table decor, unusual props and lots of candles.

“Maintaining the original character of the building for future generations to enjoy is an integral part of owning such a building. Ireland’s tourist industry needs family owned historical country house properties like the Listowel Arms to survive. It’s what makes our tourism product authentically Irish” according to O’Callaghan family.

Continuing the characterful theme, all the King bedrooms in the property have been decorated in an individual style with different furniture, colour palettes and pictures in each room. The wedding suite is a beautifully appointed room with 50 foot span of bay windows overlooking the river.
The hotel has played host over the years to lots of famous writers (Colm Toibin, Roddy Doyle and Douglas Kennedy to name but a few), rockstars (Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page stayed in 2019), actors (Adrian Dunbar and Gabriel Byrne) and TV personalities such as Graham Norton through it’s close association with Listowel Writers’ week, a festival founded by Listowel writer J. B Keane and others which takes over the town annually every June bank holiday weekend.

I have a special and warm hearted Thank you for all the Team at The Listowel Arms Hotel for all their support and use of their beautiful hotel. I was greeted with kindness and support as I have no doubt all brides, grooms and guests are.

I am from the countryside around Listowel and I could think of no where better or appropriate place to capture the essence of my unique Vintage and sustainable dresses. The bedrooms and public areas of the Hotel are so wonderfully preserved and maintained. Anyone thinking of a Vintage wedding would be delighted to say the least with this hotel and the wonderful staff.

Supporting local businesses and buying locally made and sold products when possible, is being sustainable.
